This was the first adult book I've read that falls into the steampunk genre. At first, it was hard to process all the automatons that Meljean Brook describes. As I read, I like to create a visual image in my mind of the world, people, and items that are incorporated into a story. Trying to picture the various automatons took some time but it was worth it. I'm not fascinated with this genre, and the following that it has. The world of Steampunk books allow for so many possibilities in recreating history, inventing new technologies, and lead to some interesting characters. In "The Iron Duke", Meljean Brook takes advantage of all of these elements. I found it interesting that the story takes in what we think of as Victorian England but there are events described that occurred two hundred years prior to the story.... in the 17th century with robots and nanoagents. That's just wild and I loved it! Of course the action and romance added to my reaction to the book, lol. I cannot wait to read the next book in the Iron Seas series, which is due to be released in November.
