This is one of those "realism" books with really cool words, where, instead of shooting the fuck out of everyone, he (Ka) thinks about how lonely he is. He also decides to write poetry because it's snowing and Islam and secularism are fighting for control of a small mountain city no one cares about. Girls are committing suicide because they can't wear headscarves to school, or because they have to marry old guys, or because they live in the middle of nowhere. Seriously, no one can decide, it's "complicated" and "not black and white" like life, life in Turkey, anyway. I think this book would be shorter if it was set in America.
This book is heart breaking. The imagery is so spectacular and real at the same time. I skipped the movie because I can't imagine that any film could capture what I already saw when I read the book. There is no way to do justice to the movie that was created in my brain when I read this master piece.
This book is not one of Nix's best. I would not recommend it, especially if you hold Nix's work in high regard.
