Tasting the Sky is the autobiographical description by Ibtisam Barakat of life in the West Bank during the 1970's and 1980's, specifically an interesting description of what life was like for a Palestinian during the Seven Days War. Eye opening for me.
I love all of Jan Karon's books about Father Tim and Cynthia (The Mitford series), but my feelings toward this book ran from hot to lukewarm. The story is about a trip to Ireland Father and Cynthia take to celebrate her birthday. A trip to Ireland sounds pretty exciting, but Cynthia is startled by a burglar and injures her ankle on their first night at an inn in Broughadoon. She is laid up in her room, and they don't see much of Ireland. The characters of the inn become very dear and are well drawn, but Cynthia and Father Tim run across an old journal they read. Now I am sure the journal has many parallels to their lives, but the plot jumps around from the present to the journal time so much that I had trouble following a lot of it. By the end I have to say I DID enjoy it, but I caution if this is the first Father Tim book you read, don't let it color your opinion of Jan Karon.
