Ahab had a wife, but we never heard from her until Sena Jeter Naslund decided to let us. Filling in the potential gaps that Mellville built into his story, Naslund gives us an extraordinary woman who has to endure a lot of misery, not the least of which is being married to a man driven out of his mind by his quest. This was my favorite book for a long time. Now I actually confess that it has been The Giver for as long as I can remember, but before I was corageous enough to admit it, I forced this book on everyone. It really is very good.
