So far - love it!

I don't remember how I found out about Tales of the City but it was sometime after I had moved away from San Francisco. I was homesick for the city and found this book. Within the first few pages I realized that I had been Mary Ann Singleton and then I was hooked. Maupin is brilliant at capturing the time for which he's writing in the series - from the seventies to the late eighties - but the books are timeless. I read them from time to time for the namedropping - the End Up, the Marina Safeway, the wave organ. The chapters are soap opera-like and by the end of each book he weaves together all of the storylines and characters in ways you won't see coming.
