A very spotty book. I've always liked Ken Follett's work. His "Pillars of the Earth" is one of my top 5% books. Even "Night Over Water," which I didn't really like, was a well-told story. "Fall of Giants," however, is not his usual quality. It bounces back and forth between his usual brilliant story telling, cheap romance novel writing, and high school term paper exposition. I thought about paying the $18.99 that Penguin was asking for the Kindle edition--shame on you Penguin--but got it at the library instead. I'm glad I did. I skimmed close to half.
I'm a sucker for PRN romance and if it comes in manga format all the better. Bottomline? The storyline maybe isn't that original but it works and holds until the end. Kudos to the mangaka for drawing so prettily.
This was a beautifully written and gorgeous book to read. It was filled with lush thoughts of gardens and rivers, mountains, bears, and flowers. You could easily imagine what was being portrayed by the way Alice Hoffman places her words in sentences. It was a book of short stories that all intertwined like a geneology project. From the 1600's to the present time.....the people in this book felt like your own family by the time you were done. There was a bit of the supernatural in it.....which helped the book to be a bit intriguing. I enjoyed every minute of this book....I LOVE Alice Hoffman!!!....
