So yeah Vladimir Tod may not look like your average eight grader and well part of it is because he really isn't your average eight grader, not when his mother was human but his dad a vampire. So Vladimir not only has to face up with the average thirteen year old problems like staying away from a principal that is out to get him, getting beat up by bullies, an unrequired crush and his mortal enemy... homework; he must also keep his "special diet" a secret, figure out his vamp powers and stop the increasing cravings he's been having. As if Vlad's usual problems weren't enough there is this new substitute starts to act funny around Vlad which leads him to believe that he knows more about him than he would like him to know. The clues about his father and his origins lead the young half vampire to believe that the mysterious Mr. Otis a.k.a. the substitute English teacher is the prime suspect on the case of his parents murder. Even thought eight grade bites for Vlad Tod this book rocks, the way Heather makes you sink into his world and narrates his everyday life makes it easy to get lost in the reading and really enjoy the book, Vlad's quirkiness , and Henry's puns and lame jokes. It's a fun, easy to read book with good world building, you can really sink your teeth in it. I like how the author can give the vibe of normality when the main character is a half vampire I mean he needs to face normal thirteen year old problems and the supernatural ones too, but it all feels so normal when you are reading it. If I where to have a problem with this book was that at one point you get this Harry Potter vibe from the book, the main story is strong enough not to let that ruin it for you, don't let that bring you down this is a good book and I can't wait to read the rest of the series.
