What I enjoy most about Shirley Hazzard is her use of language, which is unexpected and lyrical.

I'd not heard of the July, 1942 arrest of 10,000 Jews by the French police so from a Historical perspective this was an enlightening read. I never did warm up to Julia however and the story became tepid after learning the fate of Sarah's brother.
