This is at core a somewhat steamy romance surrounded by 800 plus pages of frontier adventure, barriers to romance, and new problems to solve for not only Elizabeth and Nathaniel but many of the other characters. While one problem was yet to be solved another difficulty would appear. I believe the author was inspired by the thought of what happened to Hawkeye after James Fennimore Cooper's Last of the Mohicans ended. The book had many Native American characters and some African American characters who were both slave and free. The author did research into the period of the late 1700's in frontier sections of New York. However, despite her research into terms used in those times, I think some of the dialog was a little too modern for the times. In spite of the problems with the book I listed, I found it was a story which kept me interested through the week or so it took me to finish it. I plan to read the next book in the series in the future. One reason: not all of the difficulties came to a conclusion by the end of the book.
