When I signed up to read the novel Boy meets Boy, I had so many expectations coming in to the book. As the only book on my young adult literature course syllabus about LGBT issues, I had high expectations. Based on my own experiences growing up and struggling with that, I had even higher expectations. This book did not measure up to those. To be completely fair, the author makes some really interesting choices, and portrays and creates a society in which homophobia and heterosexism is almost completely obliterated. The main character, Paul, is gay, but he lives a well adjusted, happy life, and the novel follows his adventures attending high school and being a "normal" adolescent. What I felt was missing: I felt that the characters were completely predictable, which made the entire book feel flat. The novel was incredibly idealized, which was hard for me to relate to. When I picked up Boy meets Boy, I expected to read a novel about the experiences of a gay adolescent coming out of the closet or realizing his sexuality, but the novel instead makes those HUGE issues no big deal and glosses over them in the first chapter. Something I liked about the book: Things that are traumatic and a HUGE deal in our society for LGBTQ individuals were presented as being NOT a big deal. The author's choice to portray the gay adolescents' lives as being normal and positive was refreshing. Also, viewing LGBTQ orientations as a positive part of the characters' lives was a very new spin.
