I've never been to New York, but I distinctly remember feeling like this was the next best thing as a kid. The stereotypical Chinese knick-knack shop owner, though, was a bit over the top, but then again some might consider the newsstand owning, opera-listening Italian family stereotypical too. Anyway, the focus of the book was the friendship between the cat Harry, the mouse Tucker, and the cricket Chester who could play classical music. And sometimes they would eat liverwurst.
