Wonderful! I wish I could give it 4.5 stars, because it wasn't quite a 5 star book (I rarely give 5 stars), but I truly loved it. I have become obsessed with medieval England lately and Katherine Swynford was a character new to me. The chapters dealing with the Peasant Revolt of 1381 were especially enthralling - an event I knew nothing about has now become a vivid watershed moment in my understanding of English history. DO NOT overlook this book because it looks like a romance novel - there is romance, of course, but this is a well-researched, well-written piece of literature.

I never actually finished it. The long monologues don't add much to the story nor to her central thesis. The first half of the book is enjoyable and enlightening....and I recommend stopping there unless you enjoy pain.
