I picked this up in a book swap on holiday last summer. It isn't what I'd usually choose, but the selection of things in English was petite. I was completely prepared to hate the book, percieving it to be self-indulgent, annoyingly whiny and neurotic, but I did really like it, although perhaps not in the way the author intended. Gilbert writes with humour and honesty, and engages the reader, although at times can be prone to over-analysis. However, I was severely disappointed in her complete lack of engagement with the countries she travels to and people she meets there. I just don't see the depth to it that people rave about. It is not inspirational. This book is superficial candy-floss chick-lit, and as much about spiritual self-discovery and the human condition as Bridget Jones' Diary is. Enjoy it as that, nothing more.

Not quite as good as the first book. Maybe it's just because it took me a while to remember everything that happened during the first book. I still liked the characters for the most part but this book just seemed a little fillery to me, especially the big reveal about Evie's parentage which felt a little like an afterthought and wasn't nearly as affecting for me as I would've expected it to be. But all in all, it was still a good, fast read which was just what I needed after slogging through A Clash of Kings. Hopefully the third book will end things with a bang.
