I read it every summer. A must read.
John Shirley writing as D.B. Drumm.
I bought this book for 50 cents at our local library's "Friends of the Library" shelves. It is coffee- and water-stained, and dog-eared. The pages are loose and the binding is broken. That's rather why I bought it...it had been well-loved/well-used. And that 50 cents was totally worth it. I'd probably have paid more if I'd known how useful the book would be to me. What a great read! The overall message? WRITE. WRITE NOW. I've been recommending the book to others ever since. Great read, quick and easy, inspirational in a gleeful, cheerleading sort of way that could come across as cheesy but really comes across as enthusiastic and supportive. I highly recommend it!
The realism is tough to swallow...easier since Oprah outed Frey...but I still applaud him for making fiction seem so non-fictional.
I loved the information in this book and the concepts and how to implement them, but it is probably one of the MOST boring books I have ever read because of so many graphs and charts and lengthy explainations to prove the theories. The only thing that got me through was the hope that the concepts could help with our sleep issues and it did.
Did not like this book enough to make myself read the whole thing.
I really considered giving this book a 4/5, but I opted for a 3 just to avoid the all-too-common phenomena of grade inflation (how I made it through college). The story is interesting despite its meandering character, the first part of the book (litterally up until the 50% mark on my kindle) is about his abandonment on and subsequent treck across Africa and the second part is about his adventures as a pirate. By far, the most annoying thing about this book is that it would superficially describe some great adventure and then say something like, "but that account is far to long to be mentioned here." Also, the end is somewhat hastily tied up. Other than that, it made for a decent adventure tale. The worst: Superficial descriptions of important or interesting events. The best: The adventures described are fairly interesting.
