This novel 'had me at hello'. I thought the beginning of the story was beautifully written and I was invested in the plot. We are introduced to Victoria, a little girl who was in and out of foster care families and group homes until the age of 10. Her experiences and reactions to them tugged at my heartstrings; basically, she became ultra-defensive, defiant, and deemed herself unlovable. I was really pulling for the little girl! At the age of 10, despite her best efforts, Victoria was fostered by a kind woman named Elizabeth. Elizabeth taught Victoria the language of flowers and slowly earned Victoria's affection. But of course, true to her history, Victoria messes that up, too. Sadly, I began to lose interest about half way through the book. Without giving away major plot elements, I can just say, pardon my pig latin, the book got majorly uckedfay upay. The second half focused on 18 year old Victoria, after she has aged out of the foster system. Yes, I get it, flowers are Victoria's friends, not people.... This is why I found the way her adult relationships unfolded completely unbelievable. The characterization seemed off and the plot rushed and underdeveloped. I ended up giving this book 3 stars (4 for the beginning of the novel and 2 for the end).
