The daily grind of poverty here is unbearable to imagine. McCourt's memoir is unrelenting in it's recollection of the constant ache of poverty: the hunger, the cold, rotting teeth, and illness, wearing your one set of clothes, days without food, chronically infected eyes, oozing pus... For anyone who thinks money can't buy happiness you've got to at least admit that it buys basic physical comfort, and it seems to me that comfort goes a long way toward happiness. I'll take my chances with the money.
