I was pleasantly surprised by how much I liked this book - I fell in love with Mma Ramotswe and her inimitable way of solving her cases, but I have to agree with another reviewer that I read: the series by McCall Smith are NOT mysteries in the traditional sense. These stories are about the human condition, and it is obvious that, in spite of his not being a native of Botswana, McCall Smith has a deep respect and love for the people and country. It is difficult to keep present, as one reads the adventures of Mma Ramotswe and the people in her life, that it is a Scottish white middle-aged man that is writing these books - the "voice" that comes through here is very authentic. I found myself chuckling often at the way Mma Ramotswe maneuvered her way around her cases. Lovely!
