I was really afraid I would stall out in reading this story-within-a-story volume of The Dark Tower series like I did with Anne Rice's The Witching Hour, but thankfully I didn't. It is slower than the other books, but I think it was a welcome lull between the first half and the last half of the series. Learning about Roland's past and his previous companions and the love of his life felt important while I was doing it. I'm not sure it turned out to BE important, aside from a few bits here and there, but I don't think that really matters in the end. To tell Roland's future story, we need to know his past. That's it.
