I loved this book! I think it was one of our book reports, but I can't remember. Maybe it was just my sister's. Anyway, I really liked this book. It had such a realistic setting and it actually made me wonder if the story was really true. Nick, a fifth grader, decided to make up a new word for no particular reason. Frindle. Thanks to his determination, he managed to make frindle a real world. "Who says dog means dog?" That makes you think, doesn't it? Who's to say one word means this thing? Why can't that word mean this thing? Who decided it? As Mrs. Granger said, "You and I and everyone in this class and this school and this state and this country. We all agree." This book raises up some very good points. It really made me wonder. This book also taught me some things. I remember Mrs. Granger saying how all words have origins. Does that mean all these words we use now, came from an origin, like how pen came from the Latin word 'pinna'? But how did one come up with the word 'pinna'? Did someone just decide, "Hey! This thing looks all feather-y! I'll call it a pinna!" Speaking of which, how did all these words- all these words that I'm typing right now (the words which you're reading right now!)- make sense? Who gave meaning to all of these words? Makes me think. This was a great book. It really made me wonder. It kinda saddens me to see those red squiggly marks below the world, 'frindle', as if it isn't a real word. Who's to say if a word's a word or not?
