Embarrassed to admit I really liked this...sigh.

Saw the film in school, read the book a couple of years later. It's a good read, in the way that you feel like it touched something inside you. Besides that, I can't really put my finger on what I liked about the book. Not the best of things, I guess, having seen the film first. Still, the everpresent simple and elegant prose of Steinbeck is a joy, and it really shines through in his shorter stories, like this one. Part of any "general education", I guess.

The entire book, The Wing on a Flea, is very enthralling and teaches children how to identify triangles, rectangles and circles. Emberley makes children aware of different geometric shapes that occur in their surroundings, be it nature, structures or vehicles. The colorful illustrations are set against a black background which makes them vividly stand out. The enthralling nature of the color schemes allow the reader to explore beyond the text allowing them to focus on the concept of geometric shapes. The book pulls in the reader with a very appealing and playful rhyme scheme that is present from the beginning to end of the story. This would be a great storytime book that can easily lead to activities involving geometric shapes.

Assigned this book in biotech class. I was surprised and a little disappointed by the choice, pop lit instead of hard science, but it's an easy read and basically well written. The personal anecdotes aren't really helpful and have slot of smug overtones, but if you've become used to that type of smug culture (which is becoming more pervasive where I live) the anecdotes will serve the purpose the authors intended rather that just making them come off as self-superior and out of touch. I think this book should be on your reading list if you're reading all the other popular foodie books. It brings to light an aspect of our modern food culture that is widely over looked in by the other foodie authors. For someone without good scientific understanding of genetics I would think reading this book is a good way to begin understanding modern genetic technology. But just a beginning, you need to read more to really understand the impact this technology has on our diet and the diversity (or lack of diversity) of the food products available at the supermarket.
