The biggest problem with a book that has two climaxes is that the part in between is anticlimactic. This book would be much better had it been split into two distinct parts. As it is, I had a difficult time rebounding in my enthusiasm after the 'first book', which I found to be quite good. It took several hundred pages after that first climax for me to regain my interest in the book, and my interest never fully recovered. Mr. Hubbard did do an excellent job with plotting, however, and there were many times where the action fit in very nicely with past actions and things made a lot of sense. He tries to keep the image of the heroes squeaky clean, and this eventually becomes cumbersome to read, adding to the less-than-serious effect of the novel's tone. In scope, this book is beyond epic. I enjoyed the 'first book' far more than the 'second book' because the scope was much more limited. The 'second book' reached not only across our own universe but spanned an additional 16 or 17 as well. I suppose that's fine, but for me the epicity of it wore me down. That's not a knock on the book, just a personal preference. On the whole this was an enjoyable read: nothing great, but certainly not terrible. There is an innocence about the characters that is refreshing, though they do come across as one-dimensional and I never felt like I got to know them, despite the length of this book.
Really good book, answered many questions and left it wide open for another one to follow! Cant get enought of the characters in these books.
