I REALLY enjoyed this book! I'm so glad I asked Claire to order this. It is my first YA novel. What surprised me was how easily it could be an Adult book. Which is crazy because the main character is 15! The hip lingo and retro surroundings are right on. Everything the author describes seems real and part of what you would find in a play. Very 1940's just like her Adult Series involving Rosie Winter. The mystery takes off with a bang from the beginning, and it really gets going. The Girl is going through a ton of issues. Her mom dies, as her dad returns from Pearl Harbor with a missing leg. Her dad decides to move to the shameful part of NY City, where she'll be starting a new school; a public school. That is a lot of stuff to go through all at once. She gets involved in some Nancy Drew-like detective work trying to help out her dad who is a private detective. She has to start all over and make all new friends. That proves to be her biggest struggle. Why? Because she has to figure out who she is in order to do that. She has to figure out a new set of right and wrong. Who is wrong seem so right, and who is right are not. She has to lie to steer through the new school year, and she has to use people against her will. That is where being a detective becomes tricky. There is a lot of smoking and dancing...and a little bit of drinking. I mean, boy-howdy! by the end of the book I was itching for a cigarette. Just Kidding! Though, that might not be so appropriate for a young person. Even if that is probably how it was back then. I would gladly return to this era again and again. The author is a wonder. I cannot wait to continue this series of books. So far there are only 2. Let us all hope there will be more to come!
