Read this for English class my senior year of high school and reread for freshman English at Stanford. Loved it and will watch any and all remakes of it Hollywood will put out.

Benioff has a great plot here and that's this book's chief strength, it's cleverness. It's a perfect example of the modern quest story, fulfilling all the typical archetypes. It reads more like a long short story than a novel, so it would be perfect for an afternoon flight or jury duty. If the story had one short-coming for me it was that the plot is relentless (which is great if you're a fan of plot-driven novels). In other words, I would have liked a little more depth to the characters. The introductory frame of the novel was promising in terms of what it suggested about the story's protagonist, but then one I got into it, I found the characters to be fairly one-dimensional (the precocious, but awkward teen hero, the able-bodied but flawed side-kick, the fiesty love interest, the Darth-Vader villian, etc. Still, an entertaining story that will probably make a good movie. Chef recommends borscht with this one.
