Slow to start for me, but heck it's 650 pages so I should expect that I suppose. Also I'm not sold on novels where we've already met the narrator/protagonist and he's telling us about his story. Overall I enjoyed this novel. We've been here before but always enjoy a good training phase in a hero's development. My main complaint is the degree of back story required in the world building. These long 'stories' within the story (which is already a story within a story) really interrupt pacing for me and I wish they could have been edited to a page each from about ten. I'm sure the reason why we began with 'Kote' rather than 'Kvothe' will play out, but I still don't like the narrative device Rothfuss is employing in the narrator. The writing is five stars and I certainly appreciate the well defined system of magic, so five stars it is.

Some parts are excellent...
