This was an excellent book. I learned a lot about the life in Afganistan and how badly women are treated over there. It puts reality into perspective of the way things are. I love the way this book ended because it made you think. It also had a happier ending than I had intended it. I also liked how the author showed how strong the relationship between Mariam and Laila grew. I liked this book better than The Kite Runner.

This is a strange book. I really liked the beginning, but the plot with the brother was a bit too weird for me. I wish that the book focused more on the main character and her "gift"

Another book that I have read several times. The Hobbit is a great adventure story with out digging any deeper than following the characters on their quest. The beauty of the story is the digging deeper and seeing that Tolkien, who studied archaic language, based his story on old themes and used it as a vehicle for his own made up language (that oif the elves). The classic themes include heroism (Bilbo's to be exact) and race, class and lineage (as was typical of medieval tales). These old themes took a new twist in Tolkein's telling. Tolkein's influence on later writers (of the genre) appears to be profound.
