Victor Hugo hit the nail on the head as he covers so much of Human nature in one novel. Hunchback of Notre Dame was a little slow getting started, but once the plot began i couldn't put the book down. I was entirely swept in. I didn't enjoy the lengthy chapters describing the archeticure, the Cathederal and King's living quarters but i suppose when you are getting paid per word for a novel Hugo used his brilliance to bring in a little extra cash so i skimmed those chapters and didn't miss anything in the plot. I felt such sorrow for the characters. The term, "Don't judge a book by it's cover" kept coming to my mind when i thought of the handsome Phoebus, and the ugly Quazimodo. The religious priest, the beautiful Esmeralda. It seems they all had this outer shell but what lay beneath it was so different than who they really were. I had to gave this book 3 stars because i hated the ending. It left me feeling sad and depressed.
Interesting interpretation of the Avalon story.
