I have not penetrated much of this text - a few dozen pages. I had heard it was one of the most impenetrable English - okay, borderline English - books ever written, and I thought I'd take a crack at it. I'd read Portrait of the Artist in grad school, and that experience helped me when I finally got around to reading Ulysses. I was deeply flummoxed by WAKE until I got the bright idea to read it aloud. Didn't help. So I tried reading with a (terrible) Irish accent. Helped some. Since I don't drink, I couldn't explore the next step - reading aloud in a drunken Irish accent. I'm still hoping to find an audiobook or dramatization featuring drunken Irish orators, or a particularly bold pub-cam on Ustream. I suspect the keymaster to this puppy wields a Guinness Harp. (Updated: Audible doesn't have it, but the preview here, read by Jim Norton, shows promise. slow and musical, a performance more than a reading. http://www.naxosaudiobooks.com/596012...)
