I actually prefer the movie - but that is what I experienced first. Everyone I've met who started with the book, preferred it. I think that the plot differences between the the two versions change the main relationship dynamics. Though the film and novel end differently, each ending seems appropriate given the context of the details given in the preceeding two hours/several hundred pages.
