Actually, this is probably a three-star book, but I'm beyond exasperated with the way ASCD publications drive professional development in some school districts, and so dinged it a star out of frustration. Tomlinson's ideas are sound, if thin on specifics. As a general text for all subject areas and all age-levels, this serves to raise a basic level of understanding without bogging down in minutia irrelevant to most readers. It provides some resources for further study so that an energetic teacher can seek out what she needs to put some form of differentiation into practice. I'm tweaked that every couple of years, a principal or higher-level administrator sees a presentation at ASCD, buys a case of books, and says, "We're doing this!" Until the next conference, when someone else has the next new thing. This isn't Tomlinson's fault, but her book is one of many that has been elevated to 'must-read' status in my professional community, without a context to support the significant changes she suggests.
