I love Chabon. But I have to say, I glossed over a couple of these essays the first time I saw them in the New Yorker or wherever, and had the same reaction when I saw them a second time. The essays in Maps and Legends fall into three categories: dull, readable, and really quite good. I don't know why, but I'm just really not interested in Chabon's deconstructions of superheros and comic books. Not because I don't like those things (especially the latter) but because I think we have very different takes on such subjects and I get lost in his fancy vocab. Lame. Some of the essays are merely interesting, like the one about the weird utopia-esque suburb where Chabon grows up. The plans for the suburb don't really work out, and there are some wonderful images of ten-year-old Chabon riding his bike around the edges of this creepy, unfinished early 60's dream. My favorite essay in the collection discussed the His Dark Materials books (the Golden Compass series) by Phillip Pullman. I read the trilogy several years ago (the summer before college) and loved them. Chabon deconstructs the core ideas of His Dark Materials (daemons, dark matter, parallel universes, etc.) from a very sophisticated perspective-- he nails what I love so much about the books, that they're multi layered children's stories that don't condescend to their audience. And that they're rich and satisfying narratives for adults, too. The cover of the book is beautiful. Three layered dust jackets with intricate illustrations. Damn you, McSweeny's hipsters. (Grudgingly) another aesthetic triumph.

I read this book because of the show of Lifetime. I really liked the book but its not really like the show. I was suprised with the ending but all in all it was a really good book and changed my mind about what I thought about army and their families.
