YAY!! Won this through goodreads FirstReads. So excited to read it!! I love historical fiction.

This one was juuuuuuuust a hair away from a five-star rating to me. The only thing that kept it from that last star was a few sections that I just couldn't wrap my head around. I think Mieville had a solid plan for those parts, but he just didn't quite communicate them clearly enough that I really understood what was going on. That aside, this is really a treat. The world Mieville created is fun and weird, the characters are great, and the story starts off wacky and light and tumbles down into fairly heady, almost philosophical territory by the end. I love the use of words; adjectivizing nouns, onomotopoea, and sometimes simply making up words to fit his needs. Great stuff.
