This was the first novel that Austen wrote. It was the last one published. It is often overlooked when one is looking at Austen's works, but in my opinion, I think it rivals Pride and Prejudice in many ways. The entire tale is the authoress making side comments as her characters play their scenes. Northanger Abbey is a beautiful satire (which Austen was so good at) but this time instead of doing the poking merely at such trivial things as marriage and position, she tossed in the gothic romance element. Without giving away the ending, I think I can safely state that her position on the reading of novels is clear: enjoy them but beware believing too much the fiction. It is also a great way to find some classic - and I do mean CLASSIC- gothic novels.
An experiment in back to nature.
