Very fun, clever mystery set in about 1950 in England. Flavia de Luce is the 11 year old, diabolically intelligent & precocious protagonist, busy conducting poisonous chemistry experiments on her disdainful older sisters concocted in her lab in her family's crumbling mansion. The mystery ensues with a dead snipe with a stamp stuck in its beak at the kitchen door, a late night argument between her father and a stranger, and an expiring body in the cucumber patch which Flavia discovers in the early morning. The local inspector arrests her father, and Flavia's investigation into philately, the connections between village characters and her father's primary school alma mater, and her poison experiments are as irresistible as she is.
