So Im a cover love Kinda girl, the cover initially sucked me in, very pretty and the inside very alluring. The blurb intriging so it found its way home with me. The begninning of the book was definelty created as the magnet in this story, filled with suspense, murder, mystery. A Love interest added in to create that love story and he filled the paranormal element so many of us readers enjoy. I wasnt sure what to expect from the begining of the story It had me intrigued but found I wanted more , I hit a lull after half way not sure in which direction the book was taking us or going. The ending however was an added bonus, twists and turns and room for lots in book 2. The author created enough interest to keep my inner beast reading till the end to find out where it was headed. I just found that this book lagged - not really alot happened. But with the twist at the end Im hoping there is more storyline in book tw0. I will go out and read book 2 when it is released.
A cute book that little kids love. A book about finding your own special gifts. Cute...one of the better of the Show-Me Readers 2009-2010 lot. Darling, colorful illustrations.
William Castle made some of the best mid-century horror films this side of Roger Corman and all the dirt about those movies can be found here. The chapter on Joan Crawford and the making of "Strait-Jacket" is worth the price of admission alone. Other great items include Vincent Price balking at filming "The Tingler" because he didn't want to be typecast as a horror film star, Orson Welles' theft of Castle's "Lady From Shanghai" treatment, and the "Rosemary's Baby" curse, which easily rivals the "Poltergeist" curse. Too bad he left out the skinny on his midget classic, "It's A Small World". By the way, please note the disturbing resemblance between the "Mr. Sardonicus" mask and Castle's younger facial appearance. Now that scares the pants off me!
A warm, engaging story that reads like a hybrid of chick lit and a script for a Richard Curtis movie such as Notting Hill or Love Actually. A beautiful cover!
I started reading this book at least 5 times after I bought it many years ago, but could never succeed in reading more than a few pages. I loved the quirky irony of it all and the crazy characters, but I couldn't see it going anywhere. Many, many pages of the same kind of wit, however clever, seemed excessive. This time at last I persevered and began to understand more of what the book was aiming to do. The humour becomes bittersweet and the message of the futility of war begins to shine through. The gradual killing off of the other characters (or the killing of their humanity) leaves you feeling just how pointless a war can be. Having read this and Slaughterhouse 5 and re-read Im Westen Nichts Neues recently I guess I better read something that is less critical of "just" wars to get some balance.....
