This is one of the best original novels I've read in a long time. Honestly, the only reason I'm not giving it five stars is the errors. I found at least three major typos, and each time I was jarred out of the story for a moment. (I'm a copy editor by trade, so knowing I was unable to fix any of these errors was a double whammy.) With that said, Water for Elephants was delightful! I became fully immersed in the circus world of the Benzini Brothers, and the story moved along a comfortably fast pace. Gruen's language is wholly unpretentious, and her characters come to life on the page—and yes, there were many times I wanted to throttle August for what he'd done. I also loved the way the plot jumped from the present to the past via flashbacks, and it left me wondering until the very end whether Jacob's life turned out how I'd hoped it would. All in all, a wonderful book that I'd recommend to anyone.
