Sherlock Holmes eat your soul out!

I like the characters in Peter Hamilton's work, and I read a sequel(s?) to this book before I read this first one. It's set in a globally warmed world where England is sweltering, has orange groves, and the lowlands of every country are flooded. The landscape is itself a character in the Mandel books. This book is 20 years old, but holds up well.
