My buddy Pete is a historian whose taking a trip this summer. I want to turn him on, if he doesn't already know, to Blue Guides. I first learned about Blue Guides from a curator at a large museum in Staten Island. Blue Guides are better than having your own art historian; you don't have to pay them or put up with other traveler's antics. This quote states their case precisely. snip For history and background context, the Blue Guides are hands-down the best. Not so good for food and lodging, which you de-emphasize anyway. They are very old-fashioned but hyper-detailed and generally very accurate -- and for history, they age very well so an older one can be just fine.
