I consider this book the partner to French Lessons by Alice Kaplan. It's also an autobiographical account of the role of learning a second language and culture as a young person: how that experience can shape you and the way you perceive even the simplest things around you. The author discusses how, for example, "milk" in English denotes a highly processed and thinned drink that bears no resemblance to the product she knew as a child. As a result, this book helped me understand that whole concept of signified and signifier...one of those mysteries from college!
