Arenas is hard to read. He's angry and he doesn't pull any punches--personally, sexually, or politically. The title refers to the time when Arenas was on the run from the Cuban Inteligencia and hiding out in a Havana park. He would steal time to write before darkness fell. But the title is also a play on the fact that Arenas touts this as his autobiography. Sometimes, though, with Arenas, his fiction is more true that his truth, and he plays quick and loose with a number of facts here. (For instance, the details surrounding Virgilio Pinera's funeral.) That said, I would recommend this book, even though at times it's painful to read.
