I'm really surprised at this series - it's wonderful. At first glance with the hokey cover and title, it appears to be just a fluffy romance (which I despise). There are characters with depth, a believable story and really witty dialog, not to mention, a mystery to be solved. A male librarian recommended this series to me, otherwise, I would never have picked it up based on the titles and covers but I'm so glad I gave it a try.

This is the book of Christine's writings we read in the Medieval World class I TAed for. I really enjoyed The Book of the City of Ladies, but this particular book annoyed me. The editor cut out lots that seems very relevant. For example, most of the stories of women that make up the bricks of the walls, or the foundations, are quickly summarized in italics. The reader cannot know the significance of or questions surrounding Christine's choice to put Semiramis in the foundations if he does not know that Semiramis was a brutal and sexually voracious military queen. At the same time, there is a good selection of Christine's writing in this book, including her letter from the God of Love and Treasury of the City of Ladies. There are also several essays about Christine included.
