I enjoyed this much more than I had expected--it's a sweet tale of translation, coming of age, end of life, etc., and does a wonderful job of weaving multiple narratives. I especially appreciated the Nicanor Parra / Chile / Argentina / Spanish language thread. The only thing I wanted was more development of the younger brother character.

I love how this book works on several levels. It's an intriguing thriller, but also a fascinating allegory about race. And funny in a dead-pan sort of way.

Six stars. So glad a friend recommended this one. Both the title and the publisher's description of this book left me cold---I didn't care about the music industry. But that industry is just the starting point. Every chapter features the points of view of different characters, and all the stories interlock. The end is set in the near future, which is thought-provoking, and yeah, I guess at the end the writing is what's called postmodern, but I liked most of it. This is a modern-day masterpiece.

a good book for beginners with regards to increasing communication and conflict resolution...
