Borrowed from public library. Excellent. Historical fiction. Civil War. Richmond, Virginia Caroline loved her slaves, helped spy for the Northern army, gave herself to God for His will, taught her mammy to read. First in a series. Mistakenly took this out of the library again, decided to re-read since I don't remember it. Has been awhile. I know it was good. This time I'll read the rest of the series :) 16Oct2011 finished re-reading. Did not remember much. What a wonderful book! Well written, engaging story and characters, and multi-layered. So much Biblical truth, practical truth for living. Don't think I got the layers the first time through. Awesome story. Can't wait to read the other two in the series.

Liked the book a lot. It tried really hard to "scientify" god, which I wasn't altogether convinced by, really. But, had it just left the description at supremely powerful beings (or, as it calls it, the "Ultimate Intelligences"), I guess I would have felt it was just pandering. So, I guess I'm glad he came out and called them gods. All in all, really good conclusion to the Hyperion story. One of the few sci-fi books that at least tried to develop its characters. Bravo.
