This is such truly fabulous world building that I have a hard time finding any flaws because the ideas here were so good and well executed. The interlocking relationship between religion and nations was fascinating to watch and I thoroughly enjoyed discovering the world by inhabiting it. However, the first few chapters were really confusing because of that. The novel suffers a few first novel problems. For example, the first half of the narrative is told from two characters point of view, then sporadically we get other viewpoints. It was enough to throw me off at first. The ending is a lot less pat than most sci fi. It read much more like the end of a noir novel, where no one gets away clean.

By far my favorite book - raw, gripping and so beautifully written.
