I loved it. A hybrid between a novel and dissertations on the human condition and sex. Kundera talking about sex is pretty much the most hilarious yet honest thing I have ever heard. The plotlines are somewhat related, but enjoyable all on their own: the woman sent to an island inhabited only by children; the woman who can't engage in intercourse without seeing her dead husband; the young man who meets with his country's greatest poets; stories about lovers, mistresses, and wanting to be left alone. The actual plot, what happens, is not all that important...the language and analysis of emotions is what endears the reader. Mainly I came away feeling like two primary ideas linger on: The sense of disappointment common to life and the unbridgeable gap in understanding between two individual beings.
