The literary equivalent of Hoop Dreams and a perfect look at the failure of American urban social policy and how sports provides both as an escape and a detriment to people trapped in dire poverty and racism. I think this is the best book about sports ever written. It's bittersweet, dramatic and serves as one of the finest pieces of journalism written in the 1990's.

What an interesting book about a family who it's claimed were the Kennedys of their era. I knew nothing about them before I read this, and I found them fascinating. Proving that history repeats itself, many of the story lines could have been pulled from current headlines. And yet, much of what these sisters experience is unique to their era, reminding us how far we've come as women.
