Thanks to Tom Stoppard for making me read this book.
This trilogy is pure brilliance. Traditionally the character of Merlin is portrayed as the wizened mentor, but Mary Stewart writes an incredible portrait of Merlin from childhood to death spanning his dark childhood as the bastard son of a king, through his guardianship of Srthur and the save war with Saxon invaders. The familiar characters of legend are all here - though Lancelot is somewhat switched/combined with Kay - and are written with superb detail and history. These are an absolute must for anyone who loves or is even interested in Arthurian Legend.
