** spoiler alert ** I am thrilled to receive this advance copy!!! This book is written as though you were reading a letter from the author to his deceased wife. Its the story of the trials, of a very religious man raising children without the loving guidance of a mother. He uses his strong faith and reference to the scriptures to understand some very upsetting events in his life. The patterns repeat themselves through generations. He was raised without a mother, now he is raising his children without a mother. There was a time when he wasnt speaking with his father, then his own children went through a time when they werent speaking to him. When he had no one he still had his strong faith. If nothing else, the story made me think about tolerance. Through his story you get to see the perception of one person with a strong faith you dont have to agree with that, but it gives you a glimpse into his mind and his reasoning. Perhaps our focus should be on intent. His daughter in laws wanted his sons to recover and brought their religious artifacts to the hospital. It was their intent to heal his sons, not to offend him. But his reaction offended them and pushed them further away from him and ultimately cost him his relationship with his sons. We all need to be tolerant. Who knows what the truth is. If your intent is good, then so are you, and any God will see that.
This was my second reading. My first reading was in the early 80s and I had forgotten the first part. Bernie always shows you a good time. I've got to re-read the series...I cannot remember if anything happens with the artist on the telephone who strikes Bernie's interest.... And does he or does he not find those jewels?
