I always loved the movie 'Contact,' but I did not realize that it was based off of a book. So, when I found out that it was based off of a book, I ran out and bought it. I loved this book. The movie left out and changed a lot of things, not necessarily for the worst, but it definitely changes the story. The story is very complex and is a very fun adventure. This is a book that I could read again and still enjoy every page.

Lowboy spends its time divided between two sets of people. First there is the protagonist, who picked up the name Lowboy at a mental institution in a conversation that makes absolutely no sense and is perfectly suited to the types of conversation had in this novel. The other person is Ali Lateef, originally Rufus White until his father's unfortunate conversion, a missing persons detective tasked with finding the boy and accompanied by the beautiful and strange mother. What is difficult at times is how wonderfully rendered Lowboy's voice is. A schizophrenic coming off of his meds, his thoughts grow wilder and more absurd, his actions barely coherent and everything absolutely understandable. Not that the action makes sense, but the feeling of it makes sense. This sort of break from reality makes following the plotting a bit difficult, but ultimately rewards with character. A staggeringly short book, it is a mystery and an exploration of what it is to be crazy and a discovery channel special on subways, all wrapped into 250 pages of tightly wrought plotting and often absurdly beautiful language.
