I think this book really empowers women to be effective in getting things done and what they want, without being called a bitch. Well, maybe occasionally that term comes up, but what a double standard that guys can step all over people to get ahead in the world and they are just being ambitious, but if a woman does the same things, she's labeled a "ball-buster" or bitch. Good advise in this book on those types of situations.

Hannah Gray is an elderly woman who tells the story about one particular summer, long ago, that she spent in Dundee, Maine. Hannah tells about her relationship with the town bad boy, Conary Crocker. The story flips back and forth between 50 years ago during Hannah's time on the island and present. Hannah also tells the story about the past life of Claris Osgood and Danial Haskell who married back then against Claris's families wishes. Claris learns later that she should have listened to her family as her life was empty, meaningless and full of pain. Now 50 years later, Hannah is spending the summer in Dundee in the same house which Claris and Danial had lived years before. Hannah has many stories about the family, but most disturbing is learns the house is haunted. Hannah isn't quite sure by whom but has her suspicions. A wonderful novel about a great love, a haunted house and a history of a past life and how everything comes round again. From back cover: "In a small town called Dundee on the coast of Maine, an old woman named Hannah Gray begins her story: "Somebody said 'true love is like ghosts, which everyone talks about and few have seen.' I've seen both and I don't know how to tell you which is worse. Hannah has decided, finally, to leave a record of the passionate and anguished long-ago summer in Dundee when she met Conary Crocker, the town bad boy and love of her life. This spare, piercing, and unforgettable novel bridges two centuries and two intense love stories as Hannah and Conary's fate is interwoven with the tale of a marriage that took place in Dundee a hundred years earlier."

Will read with freshmen class. It's springtime. Romeo is a player.
