The first thing that attracted me to this book is its beautiful cover, a Pre-Raphaelite painting. The book is as rich as its cover. It didn't take me long to be sucked into the story. Its a mystery discovered by a scholar researching a Victorian poet. Byatt creates letters and poetry that reveal the life of this poet and a woman who was also a poet. Their lives were thought to be something else. In following the trail of clues in their letters, poetry and journals, the scholar brings to light their romance and starts one of his own. There are many parallels between this long ago romance and the modern day one. Its a beautiful book. The poetry can be hard to read at times but don't miss a word, it provides so much of ambiance of the novel, almost fairy tale-like. It reminds us that so much of what we know is not what it seems.
